The Clewiston Inn, known simply as The Inn by locals, was established in Clewiston, Florida in 1926.
Passed along from owner to owner within the sugar cane business, The Inn survived two large scale hurricanes in 1926 and 1928.
However, a fire in 1937 destroyed a majority of the building.
Updated 2/10/2020 – Despite this setback, The Clewiston was restored in its classical revival style and opened its door once more in 1938.
Clewiston Inn: Home to Two Dead Women
Visitors and staff speak openly about the women who haunt this magnificent inn.
Longtime resident Anita Conklin called Room 255 home and passed away in said room in 1994. Another spirit seems to linger in Room 118, but very few have encountered her or know anything about her.
Until now.
“Locals know about these hauntings, but I had no idea when I made a reservation at the Clewiston,” said Judy, with a shrug of her shoulders.
“I just thought it looked so beautiful in pictures, that I decided I’d rather stay there than some generic hotel without any personality.
“When I read online that my room, 118, was haunted, I had some misgivings.
“My best friend loves all that paranormal stuff, but it’s not really my thing.
“Still, I figured being a bit of a skeptic, I probably wouldn’t experience anything during my stay,” she smiled.
“Little did I know that I would be stalked by the dead woman.”
Evil Lurks in Room 118
Please tell us what happened.
“Well, I think my first mistake was trying to acknowledge when I got into the room.
“I walked all around the room and bathroom and told her ‘hello, I am temporarily staying in your room and I hope that is okay with you.
‘Please leave me in peace.’
“That request was my undoing, I’m sure of it,” Judy shook her head and sighed.
“I was wired with nerves, so I decided to walk around the hotel and take in all of its beauty.
“As I went from painting to painting, I couldn’t help but get the feeling that I wasn’t alone.
“That there was something or someone following me.
“I started hearing whispers and breathing on the back of my neck.
“Mind you, it was still early evening, so there were a lot of people still lingering around the hotel.
“…I just kept telling myself that I was spooked and imagining things,” she said, rubbing at her eyes.
“I kept walking around, even though things seemed to escalate.
“I got to the stairwell and heard a dreadful giggle up above me.
“I looked up on the second floor and the spirit revealed herself to me.
And what did she look like?
“She looked evil as hell, to be frank,” Judy whispered.
“She was death white, with black hair pulled back into a bun.
“Her blouse and her skirt were definitely not modern but I wouldn’t be able to guess which era…maybe the 30s or 40s.
“What scared me most was her expression.
“There was this maniacal glint to her black eyes and she was giving me this small sick smile that I will never be able to erase from my memory.
“Eventually she walked away from the balcony…
“But she kept appearing in my room that night,” Judy said.
“I just kept telling myself that it would be over soon, and that the next time I stayed at Clewiston I would request any room but 118.”
