Haunted Placerville: The Ghost Cat of Cary House

Many celebrities have stopped in Placerville, California to visit the Cary House throughout the years.

Thankfully none of them have passed away while in the hotel…but unfortunately there are several normal pedestrians who have.

Rumor has it that four separate human ghosts haunt this beautiful hotel, and that doesn’t include the ghostly cat, affectionately named “Simmy”, who likes to appear before guests who stay in Room 220.

The Five Spirits of Placerville

Updated 9/23/2019 – Roger, a published author and skeptic, has made it a point to visit locations throughout California and try to debunk their supposed paranormal activity.

“I had heard about the numerous spirits that continue to linger in this hotel, but the cat is the only one that visits a very specific room each night, so that’s where I decided to stay.

The moment I got into the room, I set up a few cameras, as well as an electromagnetic field meter.

A Hunt for Proof

It's what is on the inside that counts.

“Many spirits tend to not make their presence known until the living people around them are not paying attention or are asleep, so I figure cameras was a surefire way to make sure I got proof if any of them did appear in my room.

After a couple hours I decided to watch TV in bed until I slowly fell asleep.

When I woke up several hours later, I thought it was just because I was transitioning into a different sleep cycle,” Roger said.

“But when I started to doze off again, I got the distinct sensation of something small moving up my back.

I sat up in bed and stared all around me, thinking I would see the apparition of a human.

Instead, I heard a strange rumbling noise emanating from the end of the bed.

“Half frightened, half intrigued, I leaned forward on the bed, trying to discern where the noise was coming from.

My heart picked up its pace threefold when I realized what I was hearing was the sound of a cat!”

Roger exclaimed, his face growing animated.

“I spread my fingers out, but I couldn’t feel anything there.

“I sat up against the headboard and eagerly waited for something else to occur in the room.

As I waited, I started to hear the sound of scratching against the carpet, as though a cat’s claws were making contact with the treads of the floor.

‘Here, kitty, kitty, kitty…’ I started cooing out loud.

“The moment I tried to make a direct connection with the spirit, things suddenly felt very different in my hotel room,” he murmured.

“The air suddenly felt very thick, very heavy.

I started feeling a litany of emotions that seem to come out of nowhere, such as rage and despair.

“It was a very surreal experience.

The next morning I was super eager to check out the footage from my cameras only to find that the batteries had died long before the ghostly presence of the cat appeared,” Roger grimaced.

“I was so disappointed when I went to the lobby, thinking that all of the evidence I had collected in Placerville was gone…when I suddenly saw the apparition of someone walk across the lobby ahead of me.”
